This year’s Eastern District Soccer League (EDSL) Holiday Christmas Party was held on Sunday December 11th at Reno’s Restaurant in Yonkers, NY. Reno’s is the leagues official meeting place and is home to the EDSL Champions Cup representing winners from year past. The cup is displayed proudly year round.
The Holiday Dinner is an annual traditional with two purposes. The first and foremost is to thank the representatives of the 12 Divisions representing over 120 teams for volunteering their time to promote the great game of soccer. Without their tireless efforts and leadership EDSL would not be able to offer the quality soccer experience that thousands of players have come to love and enjoy. The second is put our “soccer agendas” aside and enjoy each other’s company and celebrate the holidays. Although the conversation was light and reflected the holiday atmosphere it’s difficult to put a group of soccer enthusiast in a room and not bring up some great soccer memories and stories. In addition to the Division representatives and their better halves EDSL also invites other distinguished members of the soccer community to join our celebration. This year we had the honor of having ENYSSA President Sal Rapaglia and EDSLsoccer Hall of Fame Elias Tsekerides and Bill Marmo.
Peter Pinoi, President of EDSL, informed the group that today was not a time for speeches but a time of thanks and celebration and wished everyone a happy and more importantly healthy new year.

  • EASTERN DISTRICT SOCCER LEAGUE* “2016 Championship Dinner”
The Eastern District Soccer League held its Annual Championship Dinner on Friday, October 14th at the Yonkers Ukrainian Club in Yonkers NY. The Eastern New York State Soccer Association, the new Eastern District Referee Association and Eastern New York State Executive Board were also in attendance to commend the Eastern District Soccer League and its champions for another outstanding season.

The Annual dinner dance is not just presented to honor its champions but also to promote sportsmanship between the EDSL Divisions. It is a time to put the heated battle of the game aside and enjoy the company of its outstanding competitors and forge friendships that will last a lifetime.

This years event also recognized 3 outstanding individuals and organizations who have taken their love of soccer to the next level and worked feverishly to promote fair play and sportsmanship. The Eastern District Soccer League (EDSL) was invited to the ENYSSA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. EDSL and its represented was honored to attend the festivities held on Sunday, December 4th at Verdi’s of Whitestone. The Induction Ceremony is a dinner dance which drew hundreds of attendees.
The ceremony was opened by Master of Ceremony Peter Pinori who welcomed all and introduced ENYSSA President Sal Rapaglia. This year’s induction ceremony had a special entrance and was honored to have the FDNY pipe band perform and open the festivities. The speeches were kept to a minimum but as always ENYSSA takes a moment of silence to remember the members of the soccer community we lost in 2016. This year special recognition was given to Ann Rapaglia and Rocco Amoroso. They will be sorely missed.
This year’s inductees were: 1. Joe Brosi 2. Joseph Sniliello and 3. Rocco Avallone. Each inductee is escorted to the podium by an ENY Hall of Famer and introduced by outlining their outstanding contributions to the game of soccer. Here they receive the official Hall of Fame Jacket and a beautiful Hall of Fame Trophy. The inductee is then asked to say a few words. Each inductee was most gracious to receive the award and thanked the many people who help them in their soccer career, on and off the field. Each inductee also took the time to thank their families who sometimes put their personal lives on hold and supported their commitment to the game of soccer. After listening to their introduction and acceptance speech it was easy to understand why they were being honored tonight.
After the official ceremony concluded everyone enjoyed a fabulous dinner and danced to great music late into the night.

As we break for the Christmas and New Year and start again in the spring, we see 2 teams in first place Yonkers Ukrainians our champion from last year and our new team Oranje 1777. Germania was held to a 3-3 draw today by Kelmendi and is in 2nd place behind 3 points with Cabo Verde, but Germania does have a game to make up with our other new team Black Eagles. This stretch of the season did tell us that any team from our open division can win against any other open team.
No one is undefeated and there is minimum distance on points between all of the teams. There are 4 teams that have to make up one game (Westchester, Ossining Portuguese & the 2 teams already mentioned), a win could make the standings even closer that they are today.
The most organized team that could depend on their best players will ultimately win our regular championship.
Playoff this year which will start on May 14th will be very interesting. Who will take home the $1,500 prize and Trophy?

Let me take this opportunity to wish a Merry Christmas and a joyous, prosperous and most important a healthy New Year to all of you and your families.

May GOD Bless ALL!!
