2 goals made the difference this year on winning the divisional title!
The sun was shining, a cool breeze… what a great day to play soccer. Players and coaches arrived early for the 2015 Opening of the Liga de Yonkers. Liga de Yonkers, a Division of the Eastern District Soccer League, plays every Sunday at Pelton Field in Yonkers. This year the league has 10 teams. Eight teams are returning from last year with 2 new teams opting to join in on the fun.
In the first game Pumas defeated a strong San Lorenzo team 2-1. Pumas has added some new players this year and took the field with new energy. But San Lorenzo, who finishes 4th last year, is a force not to be taken lightly.
In the second game C.D. Alianza defeated El Carmen 4-1. C.D. Alianza is one of the new teams and has picked up some strong local players. El Carmen, always at the top of the standings, might have been taking them a little lightly but you can be sure next time around El Carmen will be better prepared.
The third game saw NY El Salvador play to a tie against Sport Peru. The defense of both teams really shined today and scoring opportunities were held to a minimum. Both of these team look to be competing for the top of the standings chart.
The fourth game was a runaway for Honduras defeating Monarcas 7-1. Honduras scored 4 goals early and were just too much for Monarcas. But Monarcas had a limited roster and the few spots they have left will surely be filled with some strikers who can do damage.
The final game of the day saw C. Atlas defeat C.D. Juventus 2-0. Both of these teams are returning from last year and are always in the hunt for a playoff spot.
After the first week all teams showed promise and you can tell the action will be fast and furious during the season. Please join us on Sundays at Pelton and enjoy the great game of soccer.
Congratulations to San Onofre for winining the 2014 EDSL Open Playoff!
